What should I ask?

Pretty simple, ask whatever you want to know about. Try to keep it appropriate, but otherwise, just be yourself!

Q: When writing a new song do you find it eaiser to write music to lyrics, or Music first then the lyrics?
A: Alan responds: Since I almost always struggle with lyrics, and the music comes much easier, I would answer that it has less to do with the order, and more to do with what inspires me to write the lyrics.

That said, the music usually comes first, followed by whatever soul searching is required to pen something honest in the lyric.

I began a new song just yesterday because I actually had a lyric idea first. But that is the exception. I also have pages of lyrics that I have been unable as yet to set to music, so the lyrics-first process is harder for me. But once I have music, I'm not afraid to alter it if lyrics don't fit rhythmically as they should.

So the short answer is: Writing the music first happens about 90% of the time and is the easier process, but whenever I get to the lyrics, there is rarely anything easy about writing them.

Great question btw!

Q: Any Tours up to the Northwest planned in the future?
A: It is our hope to tour following the release of the new album, and the west coast is an obvious starting point since we're located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The real question is: when is the album release date - and I don't have an answer for you on that one at this point. Progress is being made, but it's all I can say at this time.

When we do a tour, everyone on our fanlist will know as far in advance as possible, and well before news goes out to the general public. So if you're already getting our newsletter, you'll hear asap. If you're not, you can sign up on the 'questions' site where this response is posted, or at www.gravitytree.com .

Thanks for asking :)

Q: wat is gravity tree is it a song about gravity
A: Gravity Tree is the name of the band. You bring up an interesting point: we haven't actually written a self-titled song.

In fact, we haven't written a song about gravity, although that is certainly a logical thing to write about at some point. We'll certainly let you know if we do. Thanks for asking!

Q: Is it true you have a holiday album?
A: We have one song - Wait - that appears on a holiday compilation album entitled "A Very Progressive Christmas, Vol.1", released by Melodic Revolution Records. Our song is available as part of the album or as a single download in FLAC, MP3, AAC and other formats. You can listen to the whole song here:

(Just copy and paste the tiny url into your browser if the link is not active.)

Aside from "Wait", we haven't released a Christmas album...but if enough fans ask for it, we'd certainly put something out in the future.

Q: I hear there might be a new song coming out soon. Where can I get it?
A: It isn't out yet, but Gravity Tree is at work on a couple of new prog rock pieces. When they are available, they will first appear on our webstore at www.listen2progrock.com; and then on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, CDBaby and other stores shortly thereafter.

If you want to hear about their release as soon as a song is available, make sure to sign up for a free song at gravitytree.fanbridge.com and get our updates in your inbox.

Q: Will your next album be ready before Christmas?
A: That seems to be the question of the hour!
As much effort went into meeting that goal, it is now possible that the next Gravity Tree album will move out into Q1 of 2011. Many unforeseen events delayed production throughout the year, and we'd rather get the album sounding great than rush it and not have it be everything you are waiting for it to be.
But you will have new music from Gravity Tree by the holidays. Expect a new web-only song download in the next couple of weeks, and certainly another sometime after Thanksgiving (late November), as well as some surprises suited for gifts and stocking stuffers.

Q: What kinds of guitars do you play?
A: Linc plays a rather rare mid-'80's Ibanez called an Axstar. The models he plays are of the headless variety, AX70 and AX75 (if we want to geek out a bit here). He's had a couple of them heavily modified, with additional pickups, electronics and bass guitar strings on the lower range. There are also custom made guitars with both bass and standard range guitar strings (up to 7). Alan's rig includes mostly Heartfield RR series(another rare breed, a Japanese-made guitar under Fender, circa '90) and an Ibanez Musician bass.

Q: What websites do you check everyday?
A: Alan replies: We manage our own sites, so of course we're making sure they stay working (!); to that end, I go to w3schools.com almost every day just to make sure I'm coding things right. Writing and recording can take up much of the rest of our work day, but we do try to stop by Twitter and let folks know what we're up to. Wikipedia is another one, that is just too useful.
